Wingate Avenue is a not-for-profit community organisations. We are registered and funded by the Victorian Government, via the Adult, Community and Further Education (ACFE) Board, to deliver pre-accredited training and programs. Wingate Avenue offers free courses to help you find work, as well as short English language classes which can be found below.

COURSES TO HELP YOU FIND WORK OR VOLUNTEER

Barista Basics

Our popular barista basics course is back. This short one-day taste tester course will give you the skills required to apply for work in a café. You will learn about the history of coffee, hygiene, OH&S and how to use a commercial coffee machine while making a variety of hot drinks from a menu.

Introduction to the Cleaning Industry

Keen to take your first step into the cleaning industry? Come and gain the skills and knowledge to get started in this field with our short 6-week course. 

This course has got you covered. You will learn about infection control, safety and hazards, hygiene and COVID-19 safe cleaning. On completion you will have the confidence you need to stand out from the crowd when applying for your next cleaning job.

Family Home Cooking

Our favourite cooking course is back by popular demand!

In this 16-week course you will learn recipes from a wide variety of cuisines to give you inspiration and confidence in the kitchen. Meet others while having fun cooking. You’ll be amazed at what you can cook on a budget!

Ready For Hospitality

This exciting new pre-accredited course is designed to give you insight into different areas of the hospitality industry, the skills required to work there, and the confidence to pursue further accredited courses such as Certificate II in Kitchen Operations. 

Includes food handling, knife skills, sustainability, customer service, hygiene, basic cooking skills and espresso coffee making. This course will run over 7-weeks and will include an excursion to a hospitality venue. You will also set up, cater and run your very own pop up café and have a lot of fun while learning too!

Cookery Masterclass

This free 7 week course is designed to take you back to some old fashioned cooking basics. Learn to make soups and stocks from scratch, bread and pasta, pies and pastries and barista style coffee. You will also learn about food handling, how to safely store food, hygiene and food allergens.

Office Skills Level 1

In this 8-week course you will gain basic skills to pursue a career in an office environment. 

On completion you will have the skills to communicate professionally in a range of mediums, provide customer service, and the computer skills to operate relevant software for the office. You will explore career pathways and have the option to gain further skills in our Office Skills Level 2 course.

Basic literacy, numeracy and intermediate skills in operating a personal computer are required for this course.

AGED CARE PATHWAYS 2 TAFE

This free introductory course covers the skills necessary for you to study Aged Care at TAFE. This course will help you familiarise yourself with the practices, language, and academic requirements for further study.

You will learn about working in aged care, safety basics, healthy eating, body systems, valuing difference, and quality in aged care.

Volunteering Voices

Do you want to give back to your community but unsure of where and how to start?

This course will consist of six intensive workshops (each four hours long) including pathways support from our Wingate Avenue Community Centre team. You’ll gain an understanding of formal volunteering in the Australian context, expectations of volunteers, and knowledge of the local community relevant to volunteering in community services. Other areas of volunteering including food handling and work safety will be explored.

SHORT ENGLISH LANGUAGE CLASSES

Australian Citizenship classes

This free course will help you understand the language in ‘Our Common Bond’, Australian history, democratic processes, and the rights and responsibilities that are required to be an Australian citizen.

It will also help you prepare for taking the Australian Citizenship test online. Learners are provided with materials in written, digital and alternative formats to promote inclusive learning practices.
